[...] In some reliefs the sacred bull bleeds wheat or grapes, symbolizing the paradox of the ability of the unconscious, even at is most evil, to heal after it harms. The killing of the bull is not a real-world death but an unconscious event that breathes life into a new psychological energy and outlook. But Mithras, this self-overcoming hero, is not alone in his daring act. Like all good heroes he has his sidekicks, the torchbearers, Cautes with his torch pointing up and Cautopates with his torch pointing down. They are his awareness of opposites, his ability to make distinctions, to discern opposites, and in their astral aspect symbolize his heavenly outlook. There is his dog too, lapping up the bull’s blood – his discipline, self-control, honed intellect, and the vital ability of self-obedience. On the scene is a serpent of wisdom and shrewdness, also drinking the life giving blood, for no quantum is wasted here. A sneaky scorpion sucks the ‘vim’ out of the bull’s genitals, literally ‘breaking his balls’ – energy that can be better utilized by the conscious hero Mithras. Mithraism and the Unconscious as Enemy [...]

Thanks for pointing that out about Rand. But I do find her characterisation of William Edward Hickman, a sociopath killer wellknown during her time, as a 'real man', objectionable, on philosophical and moral grounds, as well as being objectionable for a holistic point of view. To reduce the totality of the human psyche to the ideal of 'other people don't exist for him' is scarcely defensible, in my opinion.

Nice interpretation of Nietzsche in general, and I would say that I agree with many of your assertions with the exception of Rand. The foundation of her "Objectivism" philosophy is self reliance and self reliance was the first thing you learned from Nietzche. Ayn is mis-interpreted as well you see. Nice blog.

Thanks for adding my blog to your blogroll, Jean. And I'm glad that we have much in common - it makes it easier to understand certain very specific experiences, and to understand what the 'mother' is, in psychologicis.

Your interest in the Mother is informative and enlightening.

I really appreciate this thoughtful and articulate article, especially the comparison between Nietzsche and Kierkegaard.

In response to your comment, "The other day I was asked by a friend how political activists can remain so strong despite the enormous pressure they’re under," I'd like to cite this quote from May Case, "No pressure, no diamonds."

Your posts are precious gems.

Thank you for letting me know about this post. I enjoyed reading the previous one as well and will be adding your blog to my blogroll. It seems we have much, at least in the way of temperament, in common. I suppose the human ego will always struggle against our mother, nature --- by which I mean not only matter but our own unconscious natures with their instincts and dreams, which are, of course, facts of nature --- even though our only hope of rest comes from making peace with her. Your poem is an elegant testament to her omniscience.
